CHILD CARE PROVIDERS TAKE ACTION ON JULY 21ST, 2009 AT 9:30 AM

ATTENTION COMMUNITY VOICES MEMBERS:

THIS IS AN IMMEDIATE CALL TO ACTION FOR
MONDAY, JULY 21, 2009 AT THE GOVERNOR’ OFFICE
200 S. SPRING STREET
LOS ANGELES, CA 90013

Meeting place in LA: On Main St. NE corner of Ronald Reagan building (behind building, away from security). Providers and kids bring banners and signs with questions for the governor, noisemakers for picket. Community Voices will bring megaphones.

General outline of event:

Meet at 9:30
Begin action at 10am:

Walk over to office; send delegation of mostly kids with artwork and letters ahead and up to office. If introduction/explanation to security is needed, say: “we have a message of hope from children for the governor”
In office (hopefully), children ask 5 questions (e.g., who will take care of me if CalWORKs ends? How will I be able to go to the doctor if the governor cuts Healthy Families? How can my provider pay her bills if she only gets an IOU? Will you make oil companies pay their fair share instead of cutting child care and health insurance for kids like me?) We will put together questions on 1 sheet of paper with big font for children to read. Artwork will also include questions like these.
If delegation doesn’t get answers from the staff or don’t get up to the office, have them ask the staff or security guard to call the governor? Say: we came down here on our summer vacation and we’re here to get answers.
Assuming they will not get the governor on the phone with answers, have kids come down to address the rest of the group that has already been walking in a picket formation, chanting. (draft chants attached from previous events—suggest others/changes).
Have children say to group/media: we went up there looking for answers and we got none. Go through questions. Then say: “so we’re going to make our voices heard on this.” Resume picket.
Have flyer to pass out to passers by.

If you cannot attend this action, please call the Governor’s Office and let him know that you oppose any cuts to CalWORKS and Child Care. Call the Governor at Phone: 213-897-0322 or fax a letter to Fax: 213-897-0319
Our children thank you for your valuable support!
